Edit: As someone who had fried chicken legs earlier today and has literally seen chickens culled as a child (I hated going to chicken houses, but the point is more…I’m familiar with the circle of life), this is a whole different thing. This random rooster showed up downtown, interacted with several businesses/families/patrons for years, was around for festivals, and was a mascot of sorts. He was familiar enough with people that this woman was able to simply pick him up. She didn’t humanely cull him, but (allegedly) stomped him to death before dropping him in a dumpster one town over. I realize this is a….well, all things considered, it’s not that big. It’s a rooster in small town Mississippi. There’s Ukraine, climate change, I don’t even really like birds(avian fears), and for comparison, my grandma died last week….but this still sucks, and for no reason other than some people really suck sometimes. Blegh.
Sorry about your grandmother. I lost my last one just as the pandemic started and my last grandfather, her husband, in February. I doesn’t seem like a lot of people, in the US anyway, have deep relationships with grandparents. I certainly did and it was very tough saying final goodbyes. I had a major existential crisis the day of my Papa’s funeral. All day long memories of my childhood came flooding back accompanied by the stark realization that I’d never get those times back. Memories and a pile of his old clothes that are literally piled on my bed behind me are all that remains. I see them and then see him drunk and flying down the street on his 4-wheeler with his flannel jacket flapping along behind him (literally the only time I saw him drunk) and can hear my mom telling “do NOT get on that thing with him”.
Your grandparents live through your kindness and retelling of their lessons. Thank you for sharing that kind anecdote, it honestly made me smile a little, and every little counts.

The terrible thing is IT’S NOT. There was a shooting in an immediately nearing town (approximately 15 minutes), that involved three casualties, not including the dead shooter that was tear gassed in the gas station where he held a hostage.
This is my hometown. The likelihood of a drunk elected official being blamed or actually responsible is higher than most would think.
