The balls are a bit uncomfortable though.
Are you sure it is the exhaust? Check and smell your rear brakes and whether the wheel rims are hot after a drive. When brake pads continuously touch the rotor, it smells like burnt stuff. In that case, the brake calipers need to be rebuilt.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why there would be any reason to have live rounds on a movie set.

I've actually had this thought while pruning my own hedges. After a while you need to give them a hard cut-back to remove some of the thick, woody growth and for some of that shit I had to get the saw out. I wished for a light saber for gardening so I could cut through those wrist-thickness branches like butter.
