There are many forces that brought about the downfall of the LCN in the latter half of the twentieth century but if you have to pick one specific event then the the Apalachin meeting debacle of 1957 is it. The Mafia was exposed to the world at large and forced the FBI into action. If I was to write a book on the decline of the LCN I would start there.
