  1. Grew up in the states but I'm technically an immigrant (came as a toddler) and Spanish is my first language. As far as I can remember English is my primary language. I think in English, occasionally if I'm in a pretty deep Spanish conversation I'll think in Spanish but that is a rarity.

  2. I went through a scanner in the US where you could leave your liquids and laptops in your bags. The thing that took the most time was having to tell each person, individually and repeatedly, not to take their liquids and laptops out of their bags.

  3. I'm American and we spent our summer in England. Here I don't take my laptop or liquids out of my bag. Also helps I have precheck so I'm in a special line. When we were leaving the UK we made sure we got there early as we didn't know what to expect. They inspected our bags so thoroughly. It was a long wait to get called over for them to ask me about nail clippers, etc... Glad we went early.

  4. Or have the time/willingness to read through every teachers lesson plans.

  5. This is so painfully accurate. I am a parent, I heard some accusations about what was being taught in sex ed. I took a few hours and read through the curriculum. Turns out it was all unfounded or blown out of proportion. I didn't see anything alarming and in fact saw some really lessons on toxic friendships and bad secrets. My kids are in elementary so they stick to basics and appropriate relationships. They mention some families are made up of same sex parents, also grandparents as guardians etc... nothing shocking at all. Anyways they are probably switching the curriculum so edit out the relationship stuff because social emotional learning has been deemed bad, when it should be an absolute cornerstone.

  6. Wasn't he running against Charlie Crist? A former Republican turned Democrat?

  7. Cristt has lost races as independant before. Why the DNC thought it would be different is beyond me. He doesn't have what it takes to get elected, too bland and iffy record. They put up some truly bad candidates. I'm stuck here for now but dang if I'm not happy to at least be in Broward.

  8. It's actually a huge hit with the 70+ crowd. My mil as talking up this cinnamon vodka and all the drinks she makes with it. It didn't cross my mind she was talking about fireball. When she brought it out my husband and I died laughing. She said her and all her friends drink it a lot.

  9. My grandmother doesn’t want me to buy secondhand machines so she told me to pick from one of these which are available brand new online. I’m a total beginner at sewing and she’s buying me a sewing machine as a gift and I need help picking one out 😣

  10. What??? I have a hand me down husaquvana from the 80's that is a tank, my newer one sucks compared to it. So much so it's now my daughters machine.

  11. I own a full bred America bull dog and shes a sweet heart but, I ofcourse get nervous when a smaller dog apporches because she gets happy and shes so derpy and big she could hurt smaller animals easily without meaning to. She has been doing better but we need to keep training, idk how anyone doesn't get nervous owning a big dog around smaller animals.

  12. I had an America Bulldog and he was awesome but I still didn't like other dogs getting close to him. He had been attacked by a Boston terrier when he was 2 and after that he always seemed uneasy. I don't care how big or small your dog is as an owner you have to be able to take control asap. Both owners are bad. The one dog should be leashed so it doesn't approach other dogs who may, or may not be friendly, and the other owner who should have been able to get his dog to let go quickly.

  13. Mon Mothma's wardrobe is top notch... the tailoring is exceptional. I sew as a hobby and I have to stop myself from getting lost in her silhouettes. Whoever is in charge of her wardrobe deserves an award.

  14. Technically, yes men can be jailed for not paying child support. It's a felony if it's overdue more than 2 years or more than $10,000.

  15. Unfortunately I know one that is over a decade behind, owes probably over 100k, has had his drivers license revoked, and has had a bench warrant for years, yet has never seen a day inside a jail cell. Instead he works from home (under the table) with his girlfriend and lives a normal life more or less. His kids once told me they got pulled over and the cop was nice after running his name and let him go.

  16. I remember Reddit saying DeSantis would've had a tight race since he narrowly won last time and he mishandled COVID so bad. Nope, he won in a landslide. Floridians love his cruelty and bigotry. It's pretty fucking obvious that Florida is no longer a swing state and has become yet another right wing extremist state.

  17. We also had so many right wingers move to Florida during the last 2 years. It's been crazy, every new transplant is a huge conservative. Crist was a bad candidate too. Hes lost florida before what made them think this time was different? Should have gone with someone new at the very least.

  18. I live in a "hot" place for real estate in the US. People are still paying 10s of thousands over asking price. However, properties are starting to sit on the market for longer. For a long while, if you wanted to buy a house, you had to buy it sight unseen or be prepared to visit it on the day it went on the market and make an offer that same day. Now you see houses sitting for days/weeks at a time, so I think the prices will start to drop.

  19. Same here. A year ago if there was an open house on my block there would be so many cars it was like driving through a mall parking lot on black Friday. The under contract sign would be up within a few days and it always a bidding war. The most recent house in my neighborhood sold for asking and took almost 2 weeks. Prices have to come down with these interest rates or the only people buying will be those with cash which will by enlarge be REI companies and I'd rather have a family who bought on my block than a home owned by Megacorp.

  20. I generally agree, but that is applicable for super upper classes who have filthy amounts of wealth locked up in summer houses and foreign banks.

  21. I expect and want nothing. I keep telling my mil to spend it all. Do all the things you couldn't raising 2 kids as a widow. I told my mom the same except to leave her house to my sister. We do pretty well, we own our home I don't worry about finances. My sister is a single mom and struggles more. Even though I grew up poor she helped me get through school, she worked so much trying to provide us with everything. I want her to enjoy her golden years.

  22. We let our kids choose their clothes most of the time and they looked terrible most of the time. Only rules were nothing ripped or dirty and we get to pick on special occasions.

  23. I do for the most part. Our biggest sticking point is my kids will try and wear fancy occasion dresses and pantent leather mary Jane's to everything. So I have to have the "is this appropriate for ___." My first grader wears lots of clashing bright colors, my 5th grader wears skirts every day and often times they are tulle.

  24. That's my boss. He is a business owner, registered Republican but he consistently donates to Democrats. My guess is he does not like the direction the GOP is going. I only know because I keep track of his charitable donations. He doesn't give to any GOP candidates just dems. He mentioned once when reviewing the donations that if I saw they were running again to go ahead and donate again. I guess a handful are people he knows and will donate to their campaigns as long as they run. I gained some respect for him when I saw that.

  25. Honestly, the amount of people who think “drinking around the world” justifies them stumbling around the park and being obnoxious. Yes, I’m talking to you, group of trashy middle-aged women that shouted at each other the entirety of the Frozen queue and kept bumping into my 5yo and I.

  26. Its not that hard. Back in my 20's my husband and I had a few too many at the Rose & Crown. We didn't realize it until we walked out. Then we promptly got some water and went to an out of the way bench to sober up quietly. It's a theme park, lots of kids, families and people around, act accordingly.

  27. Summer in the southwest is something else, especially compared to the UK and most of Europe. Its "sun is about 2 feet away" hot, and many spots are humid as hell. Make sure you have awesome A/C.

  28. I am not sure I follow. Can you explain? Getting a raise would mean a higher tax bracket so unless the raise is very substantial then you should end up making less. No?

  29. The only time getting a raise would impact your total income is when you are getting some kind of government benefit like Medicaid or food assistance, because often times the raise doesn't help as much as the assistance. For example you get a $200/mo raise and it puts you over the limit to qualify for medicaid. That $200 may not be enough to cover the health insurance costs. If you aren't getting any assistance then getting a raise is just getting a raise.

  30. Are you sure? I'm a mid 40's suburban mom. I was listening to Kanye back in my 20's. That man has been making music forever. A lot of us know who he is. I personally know a teen who won't wear his yeezes anymore (we do have a sizable Jewish population here so maybe it's a little too close to home).

  31. Or even easier, buy candy their kid can have and swap the candy he collects with the candy he can have.

  32. It's called the switch witch! You set out candy you can't have and the switch witch, switches it out on halloween night. I've known people who's kids can't have much sugar and they get toy(s).

  33. Serious question, does an HOA actually do anything beneficial or what are the perks of having one? I just see people talk about the ridiculous rules they push.

  34. I really like my HOA. We have tons of green space, walking trails, pool, mini golf, a couple of playground and a clubhouse. All are amazingly maintained. We never have streetlights out for more than a couple of days and security acts as crossing guards for the kids leaving the neighborhood for school every day. I had updates done on my home and have never not recieved approval for the work. It does keep everyone's home looking uniform. My friend lives in a non-HOA neighborhood in the next town over and it's all over the place. Most homes are always kept nice and tidy but a few have large qanon signs (usually home made) and trump flags on every corner of the house, and one right at the entrance seems to be a makeshift junkyard. I like that I don't have to look at that stuff on a daily basis. Some places can get along without a HOA, my moms California neighborhood doesn't have one and there is rarely a major or long term eyesore. In Florida... we need them.

  35. My teenager wanted a Nirvana shirt. I said (lovingly), "Name a few Nirvana songs and it's yours." She proceeded to give me an entire rundown of Nirvana's best & also not-so-well-known songs, a history of Kurt Cobain & Courtney Love, and she showed me her Spotify playlists peppered with Nirvana. Yes, my love, the shirt is yours. Wear it with pride. Mommy is very proud of you!

  36. My 1st grader is a drummer. She is learning a Green Day song for her recital. We are playing it in the car. I start singing it. She says to me "mommy don't sing you don't know the words." I start laughing. Kid, this music was the sound track to my pre-teen and teenage life. I know all the songs, have the CD's and have been to a handful of Gresn Day concerts. I'm still not allowed to sing it, she says it throws her off.

  37. I'm aware Hadrian's wall is out of the way. Plan was to do a really long drive north from Manchester to see it, then head to York. Curious to hear if it's really worth it. I do enjoy ancient Roman ruins and driving through beautiful countryside scenery...

  38. Fyi- the cotswolds is all about hanging out in a village and going for a walk. Not something you see from the car. I think you'd be better off picking 1 or maybe 2 places to stay at and seeing that local area. I did a month there over the summer and I'm glad we spent most of our time doing a week or 2 somewhere versus driving to a new city every few days.

  39. Here’s what actually should happen. Rather than these financial institutions charging interest on a loan, the government should take the loans and do a 0% interest rate. That way if you have to take out a loan you aren’t paying interest for 20 years. But politicians want votes and they would rather give the money away than come up with an easy solution to actually fix the problem.

  40. You kids missed the sweet spot in the early-mid 2000's when the loans where cheap. I refinanced my loans in 2005 for under 2%. I paid the minimums until the last 1000 or so and still paid it off in under 20. A cap on the interest rates would be good, also we just need to make higher education affordable. You should be able to work part time and pay for tuition/books/fees outright.

  41. See classic cars around these parts (Hampshire, UK) all the time. This model is a favourite for weddings. There's yearly car shows that bring a line of history in car making. Some of the designs, it's a shame to now have a change in era.

  42. I spent the summer in the Cotswolds and we were loving all the classics we saw driving around. My kids were doing double takes at all the "Cruella Deville" cars.
