Fucking shit. A little over ten years ago, my best friend and I went to the nursing home to visit his mom on hospice. She told me she was ready to leave, but didn't want to worry her son. So I asked what I could do to help. She asked if we'd sing to her. So we sang "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." by the Tokens. She left us before we finished. I still think of Eileen almost daily. A beautiful soul.
Let me preface this by saying I'm doing much better. But, I took a bunch of pills one night with the intent of just drifting off and not waking up and this was the song I put on to go out too. I would probably pick this song again if I had to.
Well one of the last songs I listened was "Have you ever seen the rain" by creedence clearwater revival, and it kind of fits the mood so it's easy to find, a good song, and feels right. So probably that.
“That song is really about the impending breakup of Creedence. The imagery is, you can have a bright, beautiful, sunny day, and it can be raining at the same time,” John reportedly told Rolling Stone journalist Michael Goldberg in a 1993 interview. “The band was breaking up. I was reacting, ‘Geez, this is all getting serious right at the time when we should be having a sunny day.’”
For me, the equivalent would be the ocarina of time title theme. It was the first game i ever played and I used to just watch the scene that plays on the title screen while waiting for one of my parents to help me play it( I was like 3yo).
honestly yeah id probably listen to wet hands by c418 or one of the other minecraft songs. spent such an important chunk of my life playing and living that game that i couldn’t not listen to it on my way out
Hell yeah! Following the Pink Floyd vein I’m going to go for “Wish You Were Here” and have that wind in the fade-out hit just as the 5 minutes run out.
My father requested Comfortably Numb at his funeral. We listened to the entire song. Just tears streaming the entire time. It’s a great song though! Good choice.
It’s really annoying being Australian because the song is unbelievably good but we’ve all had it slammed down our throats because the bridge is always in Telstra ads, so I couldn’t help being annoyed as I died
I don't know why, but the song that popped into my head is Bittersweet Symphony. It's not even in my top 50 favorite songs but it seemed like a really fitting farewell to life song.
what's funny is the royalties from your death's soundtrack wouldn't even go the band anymore. your last act would be giving a very small (and arguably very ill-gotten) profit to mick jagger and keith richards
Well, here at last, dear friends, on the shores of the Sea comes the end of our fellowship in Middle-earth. Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.
Definitely gonna go with Mahler 9, movement 4. It’s way longer than 5 minutes, but just to listen to its first five while I slowly drift away would set everything right for me, even if it’s not
My wife said when she was a kid she used to pray every night that the last song she’d ever hear before she died would be All Star by Smashmouth. This post just made me laugh remembering that.
March of '21, my family was gathered in a hospital in Dallas as my cousin was in the STICU. She loved The Beatles so we had a laptop playing her favorite songs on loop for 3 days. Hey Jude was playing when she took her last breath. It's been over a year and I still can't listen to that song without crying.
End of Heartache by Killswitch Engage. I discovered them after watching Resident Evil: Apocalypse. That song played during the credits. It is and always has been my favorite song ever since I heard it. The music video is good too.
Take on me by aha. Been my favorite song since 2003 when I was 6 years old. Was the last song they played at prom, I had a slow version play while signing the stuff at my wedding, the doc played it for me during my c section of my son.

so sorry for your loss
I also choose this guy’s mom singing.

CCR is one of those bands that just seems to be everywhere, but not as acknowledged as others.
I waste the time trying to get the perfect song.
You and me both. What ever I pick. I'll be disappointed
Wasting My Time by Default would be a good choice then

Nice pick. It'd either be that or the Stormwind soundtrack from World of Warcraft.
honestly yeah id probably listen to wet hands by c418 or one of the other minecraft songs. spent such an important chunk of my life playing and living that game that i couldn’t not listen to it on my way out
Brothers in Arms - Dire Straits
Knew someone else would say this. Haunting guitar work, perfect vibe.

I’m with you. I hope it’s not Wish You Were Here and I could feel good about Shine On too.
Wish you were here- Pink Floyd
Comfortably numb and light one up. Goodbye.
Hell yeah! Following the Pink Floyd vein I’m going to go for “Wish You Were Here” and have that wind in the fade-out hit just as the 5 minutes run out.

Apparently this is one of the most common songs to play at a funeral in the UK 🇬🇧
Life’s a piece of shit, when you look at it.
Clair de lune
Check out Kamasi Washington’s version of Clair de Lune.
I muttered this immediately after seeing the question and low-and-behold it’s the highest answer. Brilliant.
It’s really annoying being Australian because the song is unbelievably good but we’ve all had it slammed down our throats because the bridge is always in Telstra ads, so I couldn’t help being annoyed as I died

Well, here at last, dear friends, on the shores of the Sea comes the end of our fellowship in Middle-earth. Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.
Yeah I just went and listened to that and the part with the flute is unlike anything I've ever heard in my life.
Definitely gonna go with Mahler 9, movement 4. It’s way longer than 5 minutes, but just to listen to its first five while I slowly drift away would set everything right for me, even if it’s not
No Hard Feelings -Avett Brothers
Chopin’s Nocturne No. 20 in C-Sharp Minor on violin with piano accompaniment.
