Stockton sends debit cards loaded with $500 to a select group of residents starting Friday as part of a closely watched experiment in universal basic income, the first led by a U.S. city. It hopes to feature the stories of some recipients beginning in March. The program will run until August 2020.

  1. As they are distributing the money on debit cards, presumably those so inclined could withdraw the $500 on day one and get $200 more in drugs. The good thing about this being a study is that we'll probably get some statistics on households that withdraw the full amount, but are still unable to buy food, pay rent, etc. FWIW, cash transfers in other areas of the world haven't significantly increased spending on tobacco or alcohol.
