Cannot decide which console has the most iconic startup screen in gaming history…

  1. That's what I was thinking. SNES didn't have a startup screen because just like the NES, it just immediately loaded whatever cartridge was in the system.

  2. Glad I wasn't going crazy or forgetful in my old age. I was thinking "I've never seen this before in my life."

  3. I played almost exclusively Ps2 for half a dozen years, then moved on to PC. Still going with GameCube. Everybody knows the GameCube startup, it’s kinda the bomb

  4. To be fair, I sincerely believe that Sony made the PS2 sequence deliberately traumatizing. It always gives me a feeling of an ancient and powerful diety awakening to the offering you offered to it, and if the offering doesn't please it then it will make sure you know how much you fucked up.

  5. Amen. Honestly PS1 had this dread as well. I’d stare at the screen for 10 minutes “Oh no. I think something’s wrong…better give it another minute.”

  6. Oh man. Pain and misery. Like bro I’m just trying to ball out on some shadow of the colossus, can you please let me?!

  7. The pillars also change, representing the games and hours you’ve put into them. Or maybe that’s a myth I believed, but I always like the PS2 startup because of that.

  8. Yes. I don't know of it's the intro itself or the next level shit that was about to go down. Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, Syphon Filter, Silent Hill. Man, to relive all that again.

  9. I was burning a ton of cds on my chipped Playstation. Everytime, waiting for that black screen with the gratifying sound to le me know the burn was succesful. Good ole days

  10. It has to be this because a. Pokemon and b. Handhelds I feel get turned off and on more often due to their portable nature

  11. I think that the Sega logo with Sonic running is exclusive from Sonic 3, not the one that was in most of the games.

  12. SEGAAAAA! I can actually hear the beginning notes of Sonic and my parents telling me to go outside because it's the summer holidays and I haven't left my bedroom for 2 weeks.

  13. Ripping CDs on the OG Xbox to create custom soundtracks in games was the coolest thing. I don't think there's any other consoles that have done it, and you can't even do it on PC games

  14. The N symbol getting cut in half by Conker in Conkers bad fur day is my vote. The chainsaw can still be heard

  15. It's also a fantastic and clever logo. It's a G a C and a cube. All while still being a sleek logo that holds up even today.

  16. I loved the feature in Halo where you could cancel the game before it started and ruin friendships in the process

  17. 100% especially because holding Z on 1 controller or all 4 controllers would give you 2 different audio tracks, that easter egg blew my mind as a kid

  18. GameCube/PS2/Xbox feel like the goats. Just before all the online connectivity that was the focus so they still put in effort on little system UI thinks like the startup.

  19. UI as a whole is so bland nowadays. Go back 10-15 years and game menus had moving parts, really popping and varied, creative fonts, all sorts of textures and lighting and effects...

  20. Personally I’m more of a fan of the updated X360 start up over the original, don’t get me wrong the nostalgia definitely kicks in seeing the original, but it’s just aesthetically missing something

  21. Ps1 sends shivers down my spine. Ps2 reminds me of booting vice city up at 6 years old at my friend's house, eating massive cookies.

  22. Weird. I grew up on a SNES and never remember that startup screen on any of my games or the system itself.

  23. Holy Heck, I would never have thought that a console startup would be so cinematic, and then here's Xbox Microsoft, trying to imitate the Omnitrix from Ben 10.

  24. PS1 for me personally. Absolutely iconic. I could hear the video even though there was no sound 😅

  25. PS2 for me, it was dynamic, the columns represented memory card data, instead of it being just a fixed predetermined animation. Sure it was much more basic compared to others at the time and some before it, but it felt alive almost

  26. Am I the only one who when I first saw this in my head heard biggie “Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, when I was dead broke man I couldn’t picture this”

  27. I was just questioning my memory - I've played tons of SNES back in the day yet can absolutely not remember that logo. But yeah, it's fake.

  28. Don’t know about video, but Playstation 1’s startup jingle will never be topped by another console. It’s in like Windows 95 iconic territory.

  29. The second part of your comment was what I was looking for. I felt like I was the only one that hasn't seen that animation. The picture was on the side of boxes, but that was it.

  30. As much as I love the Sega and PS1 startup screens GameCube takes the cake. Everyone knows the GameCube startup from the memes it's spawned. Also it has variations based on some of the buttons you held down.
