TIL Leo Marks, WWII cryptographer, discovered that Dutch intelligence was compromised when coded messages came through with zero typos or grammar errors. The grammar Nazis were, in fact, actual Nazis.

  1. Where does it say that? I see he suspected they were compromised, but not that he knew because there were no typos etc. Am I blind? :(

  2. It seems like it was not about grammar but about coding the message. While a coding error would result in a typo the same can't be said about grammatical errors.

  3. Also coding under the extreme fear of getting caught. That kind of stress causes mistakes, which were missing from these messages.

  4. It is not really about grammar, it is about writing coded grammar under constant stress and fear of getting caught.
